Barbara Frewen is a software engineering manager at Zymergen, a molecular technology company integrating machine learning and manufacturing technologies to engineer biology. As the company’s second software hire, Barbara has been a leader in developing Zymergen’s core software tools as the company has grown from 23 to more than 400 employees. A botanist by training, she went on to study computer science, transitioning from bench scientist to software engineer. Her expertise in biology and in software intersect at Zymergen, where she has helped develop Codon, a proprietary scripting language for DNA.
Barbara is named on multiple patents for her work developing Zymergen’s platform and engineering technologies. She holds a BS in Botany, a BS in Computer Science and a Masters of Statistical Genetics, all from the University of Washington.
