Edie Windsor Coding Scholarship FAQ

What is the Edie Windsor Coding Scholarship?

The Edie Windsor Coding Scholarship Fund makes it possible for new, incoming gender nonconforming and LGBTQ women to kickstart careers in technology.

We named our Scholarship after a LGBTQ and technology legend, Edie Windsor | To recognize her heroic victory over the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA)–and to celebrate her technical leadership as a computer programming pioneer at IBM. In love and work, Edie Windsor is one of our community’s greatest role models. We want to be a part of telling her story, so that future generations of technical queer women can know her, helping inspire future generations of LGBTQ technical women.

I need to pay a deposit in order to secure my spot at the bootcamp I was accepted to. Would reserving my spot at the bootcamp make me ineligible for this scholarship?

This depends entirely on the bootcamp’s rules.

I’m enrolled in a prep-course for a coding bootcamp, does that make me ineligible for a scholarship?

Not at all! Apply 🙂

Is the scholarship also for a UX/IU Design bootcamps or just for Engineering/coding?

Both! It’s not just limited to coding, but tech in general.

Would part-time education still qualify me for the scholarship?

Yes! The scholarships absolutely include some part-time programs and both in-person and remote.

Would the scholarship would still apply if I also receive a different scholarship from the bootcamp directly

It would be entirely up to the bootcamp if they would allow you to receive multiple sources of funding. Our partnership with bootcamp programs usually extends a discounted tuition rate for our scholars (i.e. a negotiated 20 – 50% off full tuition).

Is the scholarship contingent upon acceptance to my top choice bootcamp?

We approve scholars and then we have you select a program that is the best fit for you. You can apply to multiple programs, the only requirement is that you must fulfill the requirements of their admission process (i.e. screening, previous coding experience if necessary, interview, coding exam).

Is this scholarship applicable to the “Career Track” that Alchemy Code lab offers.

We have not discussed the career track component of Alchemy Code Lab yet so am unsure if they’re open to our scholarship applying to that program. If you connect us to your advisor or a contact at the program, we can discuss.

Do we apply to the partner school/program outside of the scholarship, and then if we get into the program we can apply for the scholarship?

You can apply for our partner bootcamp/school programs and also programs outside of the scholarship. Our scholarship applicant deadline is May 15th, 2018.

Is this applicable to online bootcamp programs, or do we need to be attending an in-person program? If it is a remote program, does that impact my odds of being considered for the scholarship?

Remote, online and blended programs area all okay!

Some of the partnering bootcamps have programs where you pay each month that you’re a part of the program. Does the scholarship apply to those as well, or only to programs where there is a fixed amount for the program?

For our partnerships, we provide a reduced rate tuition for the bootcamp as part of our agreement. If a program is $10k, and we have a 50% scholarship set up, then you are only responsible for 50% of tuition, to be paid in compliance with the bootcamp/program guidelines.

Am I qualified?

Short answer: yes. Fill out the application and we will get back to you with more information. Don’t miss your shot! #BeLikeEdie
